Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 21st,
2008. This report covers the period from March 15th to March 20th, and
will be updated again on March 28th.
At Bold Point in East Providence, 1 HOARY REDPOLL was seen on the 16th and
18th along with several COMMON REDPOLLS. Redpoll numbers at the site are
diminishing. The thistle sock is still in operation. Park on the paved
portion
RIRI
follow the bumpy dirt road to the right. Look for the yellow bar gate and the
concrete
blocks. Also seen again this week was a FOX SPARROW and 1 WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW.
On the 16th and the 20th, at Point Judith in Narraganset, 1 KING EIDER was
reported, along with 2 NORTHERN GANNETS and 6 PURPLE SANDPIPERS. Three
DOVEKIES were seen at Camp Cronin fishing access just north of Point Judith on
the
15th.
Along Switch Road opposite Pine Hill Road in Richmond, 1 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was discovered on the 15th.
At Arcadia Management Area in Exeter, 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen on the
17th, and on the 15th, a WINTER WREN was found near the bridge at Stepstone
Falls.
In Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln, a PILEATED WOODPECKER was reported
on the 15th.
On the 17th, at Ninigret NWR in Charlestown, 15 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were
displaying, and 2 GREAT HORNED OWLS and a NORTHERN SAW WHET OWL were calling.
At Trustom Pond NWR, 54 CANVASBACKS were counted this week, along with 2
REDHEAD and 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. At nearby Firehouse/Perry Pond, 2 NORTHERN
SHOVELERS were present.
On the 18th at Napatree Point in Westerly, 11 COMMON LOONS, 13 HORNED
GREBES, 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 3 PIPING PLOVERS, 6 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 2
RIRI
on the 20th.
At Fort Ninigret in Charlestown, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was again seen
this week.
Finally, 1 GREAT EGRET was reported at Succotash Marsh on the 19th.
