Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for May 16th,
2008. This report covers the period from May 10th to May 16th and will be
updated again on May 23rd.
Highlights from Swan Point Cemetery in Providence this week include: 1
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER, 2 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, 1 HOODED
WARBLER,
1 WORM-EATING WARBLER, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, 1 CANADA WARBLER, 3
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 6 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, 13 NORTHERN
PARULAS,
several NASHVILLE and MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 2 LEAST FLYCATCHERS, 1 SWAINSON'S
THRUSH, 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW and 4 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.
Along Corn Neck Road, at the north end of Block Island on the 15th, 1
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATHER was found. On the 16th, 2 PINE SISKINS were seen at a
feeder
at the north end of the island. Other highlights from Block Island include:
1 BALD EAGLE and 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER, (unusual for the island), 1
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, 49 WILLETS, 4 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 1
SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER, 1 BLACKBURNIAN WARLBER, 1 BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 1
PALM
WARBLER, several MAGNOLIA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK-THROATED GREEN,
NORTHEN PARULAS and NASHVILLE WARBLERS, 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER, 3 INDIGO BUNTINGS
and
5 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.
At Miantonomi Park in Newport, 1 TENNESSEE WARBLER, 4 BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLERS, 3 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 2 BLACKPOLLS
WARBLERS
and 1 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH were spotted this week.
On the 13th at High Rock Farm along Scott Road in Cumberland, 1 PILEATED
WOODPECKER was reported.
At Chace Farm in Lincoln on the 10th, 7 BOBOLINKS, 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES, 1
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and 1 WILSON'S WARBLER were observed.
At Sachuest Saltmarsh in Middletown on the 11th, 3 CASPIAN TERNS and 9
SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were found.
In Jamestown on the 10th, at Fox Hill Salt Marsh, 3 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, and
along Weedon Lane, 1 CATTLE EGRET, 53 GLOSSY IBIS, 2 BOBOLINKS and 1
ORCHARD ORIOLE.
A RED KNOT continues to be seen at Napatree Point in Westerly. A PEREGRINE
FALCON was spotted there on the 12th along with 7 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS and
2 PIPING PLOVERS. Other birds this week included: 19 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 82
SANDERLINGS, 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 3 LEAST SANDPIEPRS, 26 PURPLE
SANDPIPERS, and 1
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
Finally, in Smithfield, at the Newman Refuge, 1 BLACK VULTURE was seen on
the 14th.
