Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for January  
7th,  2010.  This report covers  the period  from January  1st to January 7th. 
The next update will be in about one week.
 
A male TUFTED DUCK was sighted at the south side of the causeway at the  
East Providence Reservoir on the 1st.  The bird was only seen for one  day.  A 
CACKLING GOOSE was seen there on the 1st and 2nd.  A BALD  EAGLE was also 
sighted there.
 
On the 1st, 1 BLACK GUILLEMOT, 8 RAZORBILLS, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES and 5  
BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen at Beavertail Point in Jamestown. Just north of  
Beavertail on the 5th, a FOX SPARROW and a BROWN THRASHER were noted.  A  

past week, and an AMERICAN KESTREL was seen north of the toll gates.
 
In Westerly, 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen along Atlantic Avenue on the 
 1st, and a BLACK VULTURE was reported from Ashaway on the 5th.
 
Two COMMON RAVENS were seen in Hope Valley.
 
In Coventry, 2 TUNDRA SWANS were observed behind Flare Restaurant on Route  
3.
 
One TUNDRA SWAN was seen at Trustom Pond every day from the 2nd, and a  
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found there on the 6th and 7th.  A SHORT-EARED OWL  and 
1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK were reported from the fields to the east of the pond on 
 the 5th.  Along Moonstone Beach Road, one to two VESPER SPAROWS have been  
seen sporadically all week.  Also seen were 2 HERMIT THURSHES and a  
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
 
A RAZORBILL was in the Charlestown Breachway.  It was going as far up  as 
the boat launch on the 5th.  Also in Charlestown, at Quonochontaug: 1  

1st.
 
In East Providence, a EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on the 5th from the bike  
path near the Squantum Club.  Efforts to find this bird on subsequent days  
were not successful.  At nearby Watchemoket Cove 2 BLACK-HEADED GULLS were  
observed on the 4th.  A REDHEAD was seen at Bullocks Cove in East  Providence 
on the 4th.
 
On the 7th, at Narrow River Fishing Area at the end of Pollock Ave in South 
 Kingstown: 1  EURASIAN WIGEON was observed.
 
Sightings from Apponaug Cove in Warwick this week included:  1 ICELAND  
GULL , 1 GLAUCOUS GULL, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK.
 
In Smithfield, 30 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were reported.
 
Finally, 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reported from Block Island on  
the 2nd and 3rd.
 
The final number of species seen in Rhode Island in 2009 is 320.   Thanks
