Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for January
17th, 2010. This report covers the period from January 8th to January
16th. The next update will be in about one week.
A male and 2 female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE have been seen sporadically all week
at Trustom Pond in South Kingstown. The ducks are best seen by walking
down Moonstone Beach and scanning from the cut. Also being seen here are
both LESSER and GREATER SCAUP and 5 CANVASBACKS. An adult BALD EAGLE was
seen twice this week, and on the 15th a ROUGH-LEEGED HAWK was seen over the
fields.
The 2 TUNDRA SWANS continue to be reported from Coventry, seen on the South
Branch of the Pawtuxet River, viewed from behind Flare Restaurant along
Route 3.
An adult and an immature TUNDRA SWAN were photographed in Westerly on the
11th. The birds were seen in the Pawcatucket River along Route 3.
The LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL also continues at Ninigret NWR in Charlestown,
seen from Grassy Point, and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER can usually be
found at Fort Ninigret.
In Narraganset, a EURASIAN WIGEON has been seen a few times off the Pollock
Ave boat launch in the Narrow River.
Sightings from South Kingstown included: 1 NORTHEN SHOVELER at Perryville
Pond on the 9th, 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 3 FOX SPARROWS, 2 CHIPPING
SPARROWS, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, several RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and a 2 COMMON
RAVENS.
In the Weekapaug section of Westerly, 1 ORAGNE-CROWNED WARBLER and 1 BROWN
THRASHER were found on the 9th, and in the same area on the 16th, an
ICELAND GULL was observed.
A VESPER SPARROW was reported at the Manfredi Farm, Dunn's Corner in
Westerly on the 16th.
Reports of BALD EAGLES have come from Providence, East Providence,
Barrington, Coventry and Charlestown this week.
In Warwick, at Apponaug Cove on the 14th, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and 1
GLAUCOUS GULL were found.
Seen at Ponaganset Road in Foster on the 14th, 2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS.
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH at Pulaski Park in Glocester, and a PINE SISKIN in
Charlestown are noteworthy in this winter of few irruptive species.
In Tiverton, a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at Seapowet Marsh on the 15th.
At Beavertail Point in Jamestown, 3 RAZORBILLS and 1 BLACK GUILLEMOT were
reported on the 13th.
BLACK VULTURE was reported from the roost in Ashaway again this week.
Finally, highlights from a late Christmas Bird count on Conanicut Island
included: 2 NORTHERN GANNET, 25 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 1 KILLDEER, 2 RAZORBILLS,
1 BROWN CREEPER, 1 SNOW BUNTING, 6 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, 26 BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKES and 1 BARRED OWL.
