Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 5th,
2010. This report covers the period from May 27th to June 5th. The next
update will be in about one week.
The reports slow down at this time of year with the focus shifting from
migrants to breeding birds and shorebirds.
At Napatree Point in Westerly, about 500 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 8 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 5 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 1 NORTHERN
PARULA, 2 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS and 1 BLACKPOLL WARBLER.
On the 3rd in Tiverton, at Weetamoo Woods, 1 ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and 1
WORM-EATING WARBLER were reported.
Seen from the Block Island ferry on the 30th were 6 SOOTY SHEARWATERS and
14 WILSON'S STORM PETRELS.
At Miantonomi Park in Newport, 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER
and 1 NORTHERN PARULA were the highlights on the 29th.
In Jamestown, at Marsh Meadows, 3 GLOSSY IBIS were seen on the 28th.
A BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was found at the campus of Brown University on the
27th.
Highlights from the Charlestown Breachway on the 4th (Ninigret Pond), 1
SNOWY EGRET, 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 17 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 4 PIPING
PLOVERS, 30 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 DUNLIN, 2
LAUGHING GULLS, 4 LEAST TERNS. 3 COMMON TERNS and 4 SALTMARSH SPARROWS.
Finally, on a dedicated pelagic on the "Snappa" out of Galilee on the 5th,
24 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 20 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 11 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 1 MANX
SHEARWATER, 214 WILSON'S STORM PETRELS, 60 NORTHERN GANNETS, 1 COMMON TERN
and 1 PARASITIC JAEGER.
Total species count through May is 272. (thanks to Dave Gumbley)
