Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 17th,
2010. This report covers the period from June 7th to June 17th. The next
update will be in about one week.
An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was found and photographed in Westerly on the
16th. The bird was standing on a rock in the Pawcatuck River, near Riverbend
Cemetery. Efforts to relocate the bird later in the day and the next day
were not successful.
Birds seen at Napatree Point during the last week included: 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON, 6 ROSEATE TERNS, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 16 PIPING PLOVERS, 15 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS, 4 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 7 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and
8 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS.
At Ninigret pond tidal flats, (Charlestown Breachway) 12 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, 45 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 6 PIPING PLOVERS, 15 SEMIPALMATED
RIRI
On the 12th, at Ninigret NWR, 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen.
At Arcadia Management Area in Exeter, 3 ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS were reported
on the 12th.
On the 15th in Tiverton, at Weetamoo Woods, 1 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 INDIGO
BUNTING, 1 ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER were recorded.
At Sprague Farm in Glocester, the following birds were seen on the 16th, 1
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 1 CANADA WARBLER, 2 NORTHERN WATERHTHRUSHES, 4
BLACK-ANDWHITE WARBLERS and 5 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS.
Finally, 64 species were identified by the birding team at Bio Blitz from
noon Saturday to noon Sunday, June 12 and 13 on the north end of Block
RIRI
NORTHERN GANNET, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and SALTMARSH SPARROW. Two MANX
SHEARWATERS, 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER and 6 WILSON'S STORM PETRELS were seen from
the Block Island ferry.
