Hello, this is a January 30, 2008 update of the Carolina Rare Bird
Alert featuring birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by
the Carolina Bird Club. Highlights on this report include:

SCOTT'S ORIOLE
BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD
BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD
BLACK GUILLEMOT
VERMILLION FLYCATCHER
RED-NECKED GREBE
MOTTLED DUCKS
BLACK-HEADED GULL
DOVEKIES
HENSLOW'S SPARROW
COMMON EIDERS
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE

An immature male SCOTT'S ORIOLE is being seen at a feeder in Conover,
NC. The host, Becky Duggan, is allowing visitors. The address is 4095
Principal Cir. NW, Conover, NC. For updates however, call Dwayne Martin
at 828-312-1064.

An adult male BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD is being seen in Rockville, SC
on Wadlamaw Island southwest of Charleston. The hosts, Annabeth and
Donald Proctor welcome visitors who call in advance for directions at
843-559-1362. Please DO NOT leave a message asking them to call you
back. Keep trying until you reach them.

A BLACK GUILLEMOT has been present at Huntington Beach State Park in SC
but is seen somewhat infrequently. Check the jetty areas.

An immature male VERMILLION FLYCATCHER is being seen at Slann's Island,
SC; near Edisto Island. From US-17 south of Charleston take Hwy 174
towards Edisto Island. Just south of Hwy 164 turn left onto White Point
Rd. Pass through some saltmarsh, some woods, then an open area with
some red-roofed tin barns. On the right is a field with a red-roof
stable and a large cattle pasture. Pull over to the right and park
along the road. Walk down the road 20-30 yards to a metal gate on the
right. Look beyond the gate for the flycatcher. Some patience may be
needed to wait the bird out.

A pair of MOTTLED DUCKS is being seen in NC at Sunset Beach. Look in
the eastern Twin Lake along Hwy 179.

A RED-NECKED GREBE is present in Raleigh, NC at Lake Crabtree. This
provides a rare opportunity to study this species inland in the
Carolinas. Look in the large bay beyond the kayak launch area.

An immature male BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD is coming to a feeder in
Manteo, NC. Contact Jeff Lewis for details at <jlewis_obx@yahoo.com

COMMON EIDERS are very widespread this year in both Carolinas. Recent
reports are from Folly Beach and Apache Pier in South Carolina, and
Oregon Inlet, Fort Macon, and the Cedar Island ferry terminal in North
Carolina.

An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL is still being seen sporadically along the
causeway at Lake Mattamuskeet.

Up to 20 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE have been seen at Alligator River
NWR in the last week. Look on the north side of Twiford Rd.

Birders inthe Millis Road Savanna in the Croatan NF in NC flushed a
HENSLOW'S SPARROW and a BACHMAN'S SPARROW on Jan. 26.

DOVEKIES are being reported from several beaches. Birders should take
extra time to scan the ocean when possible. A wrecked bird was found at
Pea I. NWR on Jan. 26, and birds have been reported from as far south
as Bald Head Island.

Thanks this week to Allen Klaber, Dwayne Martin, John Fussell, Jeff
Lewis, Travis Knowles, Bll Hilton, Randy Climpson. Some of this
information was gleaned from carolinabirds.
