This report was recorded on April 6, 1999.

In eastern South Dakota, Kristel Bakker observed an albino HOUSE FINCH at
her
feeder in Madison (Lake County) on March 26. The bird had pink legs, a
white
beak, and white plumage except for a tan spot under the eye.

In southeastern South Dakota, Dave Swanson also reported a March 26
observation. Dave and Eric Liknes have been seeing GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES
near Vermillion (Clay County). The location is near the intersection of
Greenfield
Road with Highway 50, about 3 miles east of Vermillion.

In northeastern South Dakota, Dan Tallman banded a FOX SPARROW on April 2 in

Aberdeen (Brown County) and observed a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in a blue
spruce tree on April 5, also in Aberdeen.

Observations in central South Dakota include great blue herons and WHITE
PELICANS in the Pierre area on March 28th and BONAPARTE'S GULLS in the Oahe
tailrace on March 29 by Ricky Olson.

In western South Dakota, Ernie Miller of Sturgis reported an observation of
a
BRAMBLING at his feeder on April 4th and 5th. For more information on the
sighting, contact Ernie at 605-347-3354.

Many South Dakotans have been reporting migrating flocks of SANDHILL CRANES.

Birders should be on the lookout for WHOOPING CRANES. Two sightings of two
birds each were confirmed in Nebraska on April 3. If you see whooping
cranes,
please leave your name and phone number at the end of this message or
contact
the Game, Fish and Parks Department at 605-773-4229 or the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service at 605-224-8693.
