In western South Dakota, Maggie Hachmeister observed her first OSPREY of the
spring at Pactola Reservoir (Pennington County) on April 9.
In central South Dakota, Ricky Olson reported observations in the tailrace
of Oahe
Dam (Hughes County) on April 14. New species observed were FORSTER'S
TERN, HORNED GREBE, and WILLET. Rick reported LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES and
RUDDY DUCKS earlier in the week. At the same site on April 8 and 9, Rick
observed BONAPARTE'S GULLS, HOODED MERGANSERS, WOOD DUCKS,
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, BELTED KINGFISHERS, and COMMON LOONS.
Eileen Stukel observed a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Pierre (Hughes County)
on April 14.
In northeastern South Dakota, Dan Tallman saw a TURKEY VULTURE over
Aberdeen (Brown County) on April 14. Dan also reported on a field trip the
Hecla
sandhills (Brown County), where he and his students observed GREATER PRAIRIE
CHICKENS, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, COMMON SNIPE, and MARBLED GODWITS.
WHOOPING CRANES are currently migrating through South Dakota, although no
sightings have been confirmed to date. If you see whooping cranes,
