Birding along the Mississippi River in west Tennessee over
Memorial Day weekend once again produced a number of good birds.
Seen were: a female BLACK DUCK at the Ensley Pits, a male RUDDY
DUCK at Robco Lake, where one has summered for several years now,
4 male ANHINGAS and a TRICOLORED HERON at the Heloise rookery,
another TRICOLORED HERON at the junction of Hwy 79 and Great
River Road, SOLITARY SANDPIPER and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER at
White's Lake, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and WILLOW FLYCATCHER at Mud
Lake, a WESTERN KINGBIRD in Mooring, a KING RAIL with two babies at
Black Bayou, and at the Phillipy Pits were a basic plumaged
WESTERN SANDPIPER and 62 immature WHITE PELICANS.
Some recently reported late migrants include 3 ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAKS in a Nashville yard on May 27th, a VEERY at Pennington Bend on
May 29th, a SWAINSON'S THRUSH at Shelby Bottoms on May 28th, and a
LINCOLN'S SPARROW in Grundy County on May 29th.
We have also received some good reports of breeding birds around
middle Tennessee. A foray to the Savage Gulf area near Beersheba
Springs in Grundy County over Memorial Day weekend discovered a
surprising population of 16 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS singing down in
the gulf. Birding in the gulf also turned up 11 species of
warblers including 58 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS.
A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was found singing in the Joelton area on
May 26th.
The TREE SWALLOWS nesting at Shelby Bottoms have abandoned their
initial nest box and have taken up residence in a different box. Let us
hope that they are more successful with their new choice.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON nests were discovered in a residential area
in west Nashville on June 1st. This species has nested in small numbers
around west Nashville for a number of years, but because they are less
obvious and less obtrusive than their Black-crowned cousins, their small
colonies are less often discovered.
The next NTOS field trip will be to Bowie Nature Park in Fairview
on Saturday, June 5th. The next meeting will be Thursday, June 17th at
7:30 PM at Radnor Lake State Natural Area.
There are still plenty of good birds out there waiting to be discovered,
so get out and see what you can see. Thanks for calling, and good
birding!
