This is the Thursday, December 2nd, update of Abilene area birding,
sponsored by the Big Country Audubon Society.
Recent sightings at Kirby Lake include Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis)
and Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) and American Pipit (Anthus rubescens)
on the 24th. Ducks have been numerous on Kirby, including good numbers of
Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola). Great Egret (Ardea alba) and Western
Sandpiper (Calidris mauri) were seen on the east shore on the 30th.
White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) and a Fox Sparrow
(Passerella iliaca) were reported from near Baird in Callahan County on the
29th.
A flock of about 75 Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) was seen over Lake
Abilene on the 28th and a Merlin (Falco columbarius) was seen on FM 17 just
west of Coronado's Camp in southern Taylor County.
American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) are being seen on Lake
Lytle in east Abilene.
