Howdy, welcome to the Monday May 7, 2001 update of the Coastal Bend Rare
Bird Alert sponsored by the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi.
The waning days of warbler migration has certainly been full of surprises.
A RED-FACED WARBLER* (Cardellina rubrifrons) was found on Matagorda Island
on May 5. Directions from the ferry landing; head towards the lighthouse.
Once on the main road to the beach look for the only building. Just before
this building there will be a road to the left that goes to the so-called
North Salt Cedars. Proceed about 300 yards to the first clump of salt
cedars on the left. The bird was foraging in this area.
The GOLDEN-CROWNED WARBLER* (Basileuterus culicivorus) found at Packery
Channel during the TOS convention has not been seen since the first. The
bird was in the dense mott on the hill on the north end of Playa Del Rey.
Please do not cross the gate onto this private property.
Yesterday the sixth also at Packery Channel, Mel Cooksey found a whooping
five CAPE MAY WARBLERS (Dendroica tigrina) at the corner of Birdamar and
Playa Del Rey. Mel also had GLOSSY IBIS (Plegadis falcinellus) and PURPLE
GALLINULE (Porphyrula martinica) at Paradise Pond in Port Aransas.
Richard Gibbons had seven HUDSONIAN GODWITS (Limosa haemastica) at the fish
pass on Mustang Island. Richard also reports a CASSIN'S VIREO (Vireo
cassinii) at Pollywog Ponds.
Thanks for calling the Coastal Bend Rare Birds Alert. To leave a message
begin speaking after the tone. Be sure to leave your name and telephone
number. Good Day and Good Birding.
