Box Elder County:
-- The first Black Terns of the year, 200+, were reported by the
Sommerfield's from the Willard Spur area, west of Willard Bay on May 12th.
-- The first Eastern Kingbird of the year was reported from the driveway
to Harold Crane WMA by the Sommerfield's on May 12th.
Daggett County:
-- Three Common Grackles were reported by Merrill Webb at the west end
of Manila on May 11th.
-- A Common Grackle was reported by members of the UOS at the Red Canyon
Lodge near Dutch John on May 11th.
Utah County:
-- A Nashville Warbler was reported by the UCB near Chimney Rock on May
12th.
Wasatch County:
-- An American Redstart was seen by Tim Avery at the Jordanelle
Mitigation site below Jordanelle Reservoir on May 14th.
To get to the reclamation area turn off of hwy. 40 onto hwy. 32 below
Jordanelle Reservoir. Take the first left and travel
to the 2nd public access road on the left. (there are two stone pillars
here). You can park in the loop here and then walk
to the boardwalk to the north of the parking area. From here it was
about 200 feet to where the bird was seen.
-- The Bobolinks have returned to Potter Lane in Heber and were reported
by Ned Bixler on May 13th. This is one of the most reliable
locations in the state for this species and can be reached from HWY 40
in Heber Valley. Potter Lane is just south of the intersection of
40 and 32 below Jordanelle, on the west side of the road. The birds were
hanging out in a field on the north side of the lane about .6 miles
from 40. Listen for their unique bubbling song and flight displays.
-- A Common Grackle was reported by Ned Bixler on May 13th in
Charleston. Tim Avery visited the Charleston City Park on the 14th and
found 3
grackles hanging out in the conifers. Charleston is on the east edge of
Deer Creek Reservoir.

Upcoming Birding Events:
May 15th (Tue): Wasatch Audubon Society Meeting - Nature-Trekking in
Ecuador is the topic for our May meeting. For those of us who haven’t
had the opportunity to experience the exotic Ecuadorian habitats, this
will be an interesting program. Mary McKinley, Executive Director for
the Ogden Nature Center has had such an experience and will share her
adventure with us. Come and bring a friend. At the Ogden Nature Center
(966 W 12th).
May 16th (Wed): Wasatch Audubon Bird Walk - Willard Bay - Meet at 7:30
at McDonald’s (1838 W 2700N, east of I-15 exit #349) for breakfast or at

information can be found on the Festival Home Page.
May 19th (Sat): Red Cliff Audubon Field Trip - Grafton/Springdale/Kolob

surprises, but expect to find plenty of warblers, flycatchers and
sparrows. The Springdale Pond is well known for a rare bird or two and
is always exciting. Time allowing and for those that are willing we will
bird the road from the town of Virgin to Kolob Reservoir, hoping to
catch early glimpses of such species as Lewis' woodpecker and, at the
reservoir, loons and plovers. . Meet at the St. George BLM at 7:00 AM or
Lin's parking lot in Hurricane at 7:30 AM or if you know where the
Grafton ghost town is we'll see you there at about 8:00 AM.
